Brazil’s Support for Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Plan: A Path Towards Regional Stability

Brazil’s Support for Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Plan: A Path Towards Regional Stability

Brazil's ruling political party, the Workers' Party (PT), has voiced strong support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, which is based on principles of dialogue and international law. According to Romênio Pereira, the party's International Relations Secretary, this plan not only seeks to resolve the territorial dispute but also aims to improve the well-being of the populations involved.

Pereira emphasized that a “more explicit” backing of Morocco's autonomy initiative is possible, as it aligns with Brazil’s commitment to peace, dialogue, and international legal frameworks. He noted that the autonomy plan offers a promising solution to the region's long-standing issues, while ensuring the welfare of the people affected.

Brazil’s stance on the Sahara issue, Pereira explained, remains balanced and constructive, as the country continues to support the United Nations' efforts to find a peaceful, consensual, and mutually acceptable solution. He referenced the Brazilian Senate's endorsement of Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal, which took place in June 2023, as a sign of growing diplomatic support for the plan.

Pereira also highlighted the recent visit of Brazil's Foreign Minister to Morocco, where the government reiterated its recognition of Morocco’s serious and credible efforts to move forward with resolving the dispute. Looking ahead, Pereira is optimistic about the future of Morocco-Brazil relations, particularly as both nations explore opportunities for collaboration in areas such as food security, green economy, tourism, culture, and technology.

The strengthening of bilateral ties is further reflected in the reopening of the Casablanca-Sao Paulo air route, set to relaunch in December. This initiative is expected to enhance trade and cooperation, particularly as both countries tackle shared challenges such as climate change.

In conclusion, Brazil’s growing support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in the Sahara reflects its commitment to regional stability, fostering deeper diplomatic and economic relations that promise mutual benefits for both nations.
