Powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes off Indonesia, tsunami warning issued
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 in magnitude struck off the coast of Indonesia, prompting warnings over the possibility of tsunami waves in nearby coastal areas.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred at 21:58 UTC, with its epicenter located around 162 kilometers from Labuan Bajo. The tremor was recorded at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
The strength of the earthquake raised concerns about possible aftershocks and potential impacts on coastal communities. Local reports also indicated that sea levels appeared to recede noticeably at some beaches, increasing concerns about the possibility of tsunami activity.
Several strong aftershocks were reportedly detected following the main earthquake, while authorities continued to assess the situation. At the time of the initial reports, there was no confirmed information regarding casualties or the extent of material damage.
Indonesian authorities are closely monitoring the affected areas and assessing the potential consequences of the earthquake. Emergency agencies are also following tsunami warnings and advising coastal communities to remain alert and follow official instructions.
Indonesia is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, making the country particularly vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and related hazards.
Further assessments are expected to provide a clearer picture of the impact as authorities continue surveying the affected areas and monitoring possible aftershocks and changes in sea conditions.
