European leaders call for unity in new Ukraine peace plan at London summit
European leaders convened in London on March 2, 2025, to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, issuing a unified call for action and collaboration on a new peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict.
"It is time to act, to take the lead, and to unite around a new plan for a just and lasting peace," declared British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a press briefing summarizing the summit's outcomes.
However, Starmer acknowledged that any sustainable ceasefire in Ukraine would require "security guarantees from the United States." Stressing the importance of American involvement, he pointed to what he described as "strong U.S. support" as a cornerstone of the effort.
"We are working closely with the United States on this matter following my meeting with President Trump last week," Starmer stated. "Let’s be clear: we and the president agree on the urgent need for a durable peace. Now, we must act together."
Discussions at the summit also included proposals to increase defense spending to bolster European security. The United Kingdom recently announced plans to raise its defense budget to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, signaling its commitment to strengthening its military capabilities.
The summit brought together key leaders from Europe and beyond. Attendees included representatives from Ukraine, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Romania. Turkey was represented by its foreign affairs minister. High-profile participants also included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
As the summit concluded, the emphasis on unity and decisive action underscored the urgency of finding a pathway to peace in the region.
