Moroccan Triumph: Soufiane El Bakkali Honored by King Mohammed VI
In a moment of national pride, King Mohammed VI received Olympic gold medalist Soufiane El Bakkali at the Royal Palace in Tetouan, celebrating his triumph in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The monarch awarded El Bakkali the prestigious Ouissam Al Arch, Order of Commander, acknowledging his remarkable achievement.
El Bakkali's victory at the Stade de France, achieved in 8 minutes and 6 seconds, marked his second consecutive Olympic gold, following his success at Tokyo 2020. His win not only brought immense joy to Morocco but also secured the country's first medal at the Paris Games, solidifying his reputation on the global athletic stage.
In a heartfelt interview with beIN Sports, El Bakkali dedicated his medal to King Mohammed VI, expressing gratitude for overcoming challenges, including a severe injury that nearly sidelined him. Support from his coach and the Moroccan Athletics Federation proved crucial in his journey to Olympic glory.
The steeplechase was fiercely competitive, with strong challenges from Ethiopian athletes. El Bakkali credited fellow Moroccan Mohamed Tendouft for his strategic support during the race, which helped disrupt the competition and secure victory. “I spoke to him during the competition to advance in the race, which allowed us to change the order,” El Bakkali shared with Arryadia.
Morocco also celebrated a bronze medal in the U23 football tournament, adding to the country's achievements in Paris. Despite a generally underwhelming overall performance at the 2024 Games, El Bakkali’s success stood out as a beacon of excellence for the North African nation.
