Fez building collapse: Qatari Emir sends condolences to HM King Mohammed VI
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, sent a message of condolences to HM King Mohammed VI following the collapse of two residential buildings in Fez, which resulted in 22 fatalities and left 16 people injured. The injured were transferred to the city’s university hospital for treatment.
According to the Qatari press, the Emir also wished a speedy recovery to those wounded in the tragic incident. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the buildings was unoccupied at the time, while the other was hosting a baptism ceremony.
The structures, constructed in 2006 under a self-construction program in the Ain Smen district, were part of the initiative “Fez, city without slums” aimed at providing housing for local residents.
Alongside a judicial investigation led by the competent prosecutor’s office, administrative and technical inquiries have been launched. A specialized engineering firm has been tasked with collecting data, identifying the technical causes of the collapse, and reviewing procedural failures that may have compromised building and urban planning regulations.
Local authorities emphasized that these investigations aim to determine administrative and technical responsibilities linked to the disaster.
