YPG/SDF supporters arrested in Brussels following violent clashes with police
Belgian authorities have arrested several supporters of the YPG/SDF group in Brussels following violent demonstrations that resulted in injuries to police officers, according to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation was launched after unrest erupted during protests held on January 21 near European Union institutions. Prosecutors said demonstrators threw stones, glass bottles, and pieces of street furniture at police officers, leaving nine officers injured.
Police in the Brussels Capital Region detained four suspects aged between 19 and 47. Officials confirmed that three of them had previous convictions related to assault. The suspects were initially placed in custody before the case was transferred to an investigating judge.
Following judicial review, arrest warrants were issued for three of the suspects on charges including assault causing incapacity for work to law enforcement officers and armed rebellion. One suspect was released under judicial supervision.
Earlier in the week, clashes involving YPG/SDF sympathizers prompted a strong police response as authorities sought to secure public order around EU institutions.
