Germany withdraws support for Infantino amid growing FIFA criticism

The German Football Association (DFB) has decided not to join the collective backing for FIFA President Gianni Infantino's expected re-election, marking a significant development as criticism of football's governing body continues to grow.

The decision follows controversy surrounding the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The reversal of his suspension after a red card allowed the striker to participate in the Round of 16, prompting questions from several football associations about the transparency and consistency of FIFA's disciplinary procedures.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said Germany would distance itself from automatically supporting Infantino, emphasizing the importance of credibility, fairness, and transparent governance within international football. The move reflects broader concerns about decision-making processes at the highest level of the sport.

Germany is not the only federation expressing reservations. Several European football associations have publicly called for greater accountability and institutional reforms within FIFA. Other national federations are also reportedly reviewing their positions ahead of the organization's presidential election scheduled for 2027.

Despite the growing criticism, Infantino remains the favorite to secure another term as FIFA president, largely because no official challenger has declared a candidacy. Football governance has become an increasingly important issue in recent years, with federations and supporters demanding stronger oversight, clearer regulations, and greater confidence in decisions that affect major international competitions. The debate surrounding the Balogun case has renewed calls for FIFA to strengthen its institutional credibility as it prepares for future tournaments and leadership elections.
