Lyon firefighters’ ball turns into political clash between LFI and Uni activists
A traditional firefighters’ ball in Lyon became the scene of a political confrontation after an altercation involving activists from La France Insoumise (LFI) and members of the right-wing student union UNI.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 13, during the first evening of the annual event organized by the Lyon Corneille fire station in the city’s 3rd arrondissement.
Several complaints have been filed by participants from both sides following the confrontation, with each group offering a different account of what happened.
Conflicting accounts after the altercation
According to LFI Lyon, several young activists were allegedly subjected to physical and verbal attacks during the evening. In a statement, the movement reported insults described as racist and xenophobic, as well as allegations of spitting and a physical assault.
One person who reported being injured went to Croix-Rousse Hospital to have their injuries medically documented. Complaints were subsequently filed over the alleged acts of violence.
The statement was also shared by Anaïs Beloussa-Cherifi, a member of parliament and municipal councillor in Lyon.
Uni members contest allegations
Members of Uni have disputed the accusations made by LFI activists, rejecting the version of events presented by their political opponents.
Both groups have filed complaints, meaning authorities will now be responsible for determining the sequence of events and establishing whether offences were committed.
No final conclusions have been reached at this stage, and investigations are expected to examine statements from witnesses and any available evidence.
A festive event overshadowed by political tensions
The confrontation occurred during a popular summer tradition organized by French firefighters, an event usually associated with music, gatherings and community celebrations.
The incident highlights the persistence of political tensions between activist groups, which can sometimes spill over into public events beyond traditional political settings.
Authorities will now assess the circumstances surrounding the clash as the different parties await the outcome of the legal process.
