Ukraine journalists join protests after Zelensky government reshuffle sparks backlash
A decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to restructure his government has triggered public protests in Ukraine, with journalists from a media outlet considered close to the authorities joining demonstrations against the move.
The protests were sparked by Zelensky’s announcement of a government reshuffle aimed at introducing what he described as a “change in political strategy.” Among the most notable decisions was the planned departure of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a figure who had gained significant popularity since taking office in January 2026.
Demonstrations have been held in several locations, including outside the presidential palace in Kyiv, where participants expressed opposition to the government decision.
United24 media team suspends publications to join protests
Among those taking part are journalists from United24 Media, an English-language digital platform that announced it had temporarily suspended its publications in order to participate in the demonstrations.
The outlet was created in connection with United24, a government-backed initiative launched in May 2022 to collect international donations in support of Ukraine.
United24 Media presents itself as a platform covering Ukrainian culture, history, businesses, society and the ongoing war with Russia. However, critics have frequently described the outlet as being closely aligned with the Ukrainian government.
The participation of journalists linked to such a platform has drawn particular attention, as it suggests that opposition to the reshuffle extends beyond traditional political critics.
Growing debate over political direction during wartime
The reaction to the government changes highlights broader discussions within Ukraine about leadership choices during the ongoing conflict with Russia.
While supporters of the reshuffle argue that adjustments are necessary to adapt government strategy to new challenges, opponents have questioned the timing and consequences of replacing popular officials during a period of war.
The demonstrations reflect rising public scrutiny of decisions made by Ukraine’s leadership as the country continues to manage military, political and economic pressures.
A sensitive moment for Zelensky’s administration
The controversy surrounding Fedorov’s departure represents a significant political challenge for Zelensky’s administration. The involvement of figures from media circles traditionally viewed as supportive of the government adds another dimension to the debate.
As protests continue, authorities will face pressure to explain the reasons behind the reshuffle and reassure citizens about the future direction of Ukraine’s wartime governance.
