Sterling remains near two-month peak as UK fiscal worries ease
The British pound remained close to its strongest level against the U.S. dollar in more than two months on Thursday, supported by improving market sentiment over the United Kingdom’s fiscal direction and reduced concerns about government spending plans.
Sterling traded slightly lower against the euro but maintained recent gains after investors reacted positively to expectations surrounding future economic policy decisions in London. The currency’s resilience reflects a shift in market confidence following earlier uncertainty over the country’s budget strategy.
The pound stood at $1.3533, down 0.05%, after gaining 1.13% in the previous session to reach $1.3556, its highest point since May 12.
Investors welcome signs of fiscal discipline
Market attention has focused on the expected appointment of Shabana Mahmood as finance minister when Andy Burnham is expected to become Britain’s prime minister next week.
The possible decision to select Mahmood rather than the more left-wing energy minister Ed Miliband has been viewed by some investors as a signal of a more cautious approach toward public finances.
Matthew Ryan, head of market strategy at financial services firm Ebury, said markets would likely interpret a move away from Miliband as “modestly supportive” because of concerns over the potential for greater fiscal expansion.
UK economic growth remains fragile
Despite the pound’s recent strength, economic data showed continued challenges for the British economy. The United Kingdom recorded only minimal growth in May, with expansion in the services sector offset by contractions elsewhere.
The figures suggest that business confidence remains under pressure, highlighting the difficult environment facing policymakers as they attempt to balance economic support with fiscal responsibility.
Dollar stability reflects changing rate expectations
The U.S. dollar remained broadly stable against major currencies as investors assessed the impact of slowing inflation on expectations for future interest rate decisions.
While softer inflation has increased speculation about potential adjustments in U.S. monetary policy, concerns over rising oil prices continue to create uncertainty in global markets.
For sterling, the combination of improved fiscal sentiment and shifting international market dynamics has helped maintain recent gains, though analysts remain cautious about the outlook for the currency amid ongoing economic challenges.
