Stellantis launches Smart Car platform at Morocco’s Kenitra plant

Stellantis has officially launched production of its new Smart Car platform at its manufacturing facility in Kenitra, Morocco, marking an important milestone in the company's industrial strategy for the Middle East and Africa.

The new platform will initially support the production of the Fiat Fastback and Grizzly, two models developed as part of Stellantis' global product strategy. Designed to meet the needs of families in multiple international markets, the vehicles combine practicality, modern styling, and flexible mobility solutions.

The Fiat Fastback offers a sporty and contemporary design, while the Grizzly is positioned as a spacious and versatile SUV. Both models will be available with a range of powertrain options, including traditional internal combustion engines and fully electric versions, reflecting Stellantis' commitment to expanding accessible and sustainable mobility.

Commercial sales of the two models are expected to begin during the final quarter of 2026.

During the launch ceremony, Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade highlighted the rapid development of the Kenitra manufacturing complex since its inauguration in 2019. The facility has steadily expanded its production capabilities while significantly increasing local industrial integration, reinforcing Morocco's position as one of Africa's leading automotive manufacturing hubs.

Stellantis executives described the project as a key component of the company's FastLane 2030 strategy, emphasizing that the Smart Car platform combines industrial competitiveness, local sourcing, and production flexibility to serve a wide range of international markets.

The expansion also increases the plant's manufacturing capacity, including passenger vehicles, engines, and micro-mobility products. In addition, new industrial activities such as dashboard support manufacturing and electric vehicle battery production are being incorporated into the site.

Today, the Kenitra facility operates as an integrated industrial complex that brings together vehicle assembly, engine manufacturing, and mobility solutions under one location. This integrated approach strengthens Stellantis' ability to respond efficiently to evolving market demand while supporting technological innovation.

The launch of the Smart Car platform is also expected to accelerate the growth of Morocco's automotive supply chain. By expanding cooperation with local and regional suppliers, Stellantis aims to further strengthen industrial competitiveness and increase local content in vehicle production.

The company has set a long-term objective of reaching 75% local integration by 2030, supported by expanded supplier networks, regional sourcing strategies, and new industrial partnerships throughout the automotive value chain.

Industry observers view the investment as another sign of Morocco's growing importance within the global automotive sector, as international manufacturers continue to expand production capacity and develop electric mobility projects across the country.
