Turkey arrests 119 suspects linked to Islamic State in nationwide operation
Turkish authorities have arrested 119 people suspected of links to the Islamic State group (IS, also known as Daesh) during a nationwide security operation, the Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday.
The operation was carried out by the Turkish gendarmerie across 30 provinces, including major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and Adana, according to an official statement.
Suspects accused of membership and online activity
The Interior Ministry said those detained were suspected of being members of the extremist organization, spreading its propaganda through social media platforms and providing financial support through individuals connected to the group or through organizations presented as charitable associations.
Authorities did not immediately provide further details regarding the identities of the suspects or the specific locations of the arrests.
Turkey intensifies security measures against extremist networks
The latest operation is part of Turkey’s ongoing efforts to dismantle networks linked to extremist groups operating inside the country.
Turkish security forces have regularly carried out raids targeting suspected members of Daesh, particularly those accused of recruitment activities, financing operations or online propaganda.
Previous operations targeted suspected militants
The announcement comes weeks after a suspected Islamic State member was killed in a shootout with police south of Ankara in late June.
The incident occurred shortly before a major NATO summit held in the Turkish capital, prompting increased security measures.
Following that operation, authorities in Ankara ordered the detention of 209 people suspected of links to Islamic State and certain far-left extremist groups.
Authorities maintain pressure on extremist organizations
Turkey remains a key target in the fight against jihadist networks due to its geographic position between Europe, the Middle East and conflict zones.
Security operations against suspected extremist cells continue as Turkish authorities seek to prevent recruitment, financing and potential attacks linked to international militant organizations.
