NASA accelerates Artemis programme with moon landing targeted for 2028

NASA is moving to accelerate its Artemis lunar programme, with agency administrator Jared Isaacman announcing plans aimed at returning American astronauts to the Moon by 2028.

Speaking during an event in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Isaacman said NASA was speeding up the programme and that hardware for the upcoming Artemis missions was already progressing. He indicated that the agency's objective is to establish a renewed human presence on the lunar surface after decades without crewed lunar landings.

The announcement comes as NASA continues to develop the complex architecture required for future lunar missions. The Artemis programme relies on several major systems, including the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the Orion spacecraft and commercial lunar vehicles developed by private companies.

According to the current mission concept, astronauts aboard Orion would be launched from Earth by the SLS rocket before entering lunar mission operations. The spacecraft would then interact with commercial vehicles designed to support the astronauts' journey to the lunar surface.

The programme has faced significant technical and scheduling challenges, however. One of the major issues concerns the development of the vehicles required for lunar operations and the coordination of systems supplied by different contractors.

The original Artemis III architecture has also been affected by setbacks involving commercial launch and lunar-landing technology. Blue Origin, which is developing a lunar lander for NASA, has been working to meet the agency's requirements and delivery schedule.

The planned missions are expected to involve a series of complex manoeuvres in space, including docking operations between spacecraft. Such procedures are essential for transferring astronauts between different vehicles during their journey to and from the Moon.

NASA's renewed lunar ambitions form part of a broader strategy to establish a sustainable human presence around and eventually on the Moon. The agency sees lunar exploration as an opportunity to test technologies and operational systems that could later support missions to Mars.

The accelerated timetable nevertheless remains dependent on successful testing, certification and integration of the various systems involved. Any significant technical problems could affect the planned schedule.

If the programme proceeds as planned, a lunar landing in 2028 would represent a major milestone for the United States and another step in the growing international and commercial competition surrounding lunar exploration.
