Matvey Safonov breaks into ESPN’s top 10 goalkeepers in the world

Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov has earned a place among the world’s top 10 goalkeepers in ESPN’s latest ranking, highlighting the rapid progress of the Paris Saint-Germain player on the international stage.

Safonov was ranked 10th in the list, with ESPN particularly praising his ability to save penalties. His performances in decisive shootouts have strengthened his reputation as a goalkeeper capable of handling high-pressure situations.

Spanish goalkeeper David Raya of Arsenal topped the ranking, followed by Real Madrid’s Belgian star Thibaut Courtois. Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma completed the top three.

Safonov joined Paris Saint-Germain from Krasnodar in 2024 and gradually established himself as an important option for the French club. He became the team’s first-choice goalkeeper in December 2025, giving him a more prominent role in domestic and international competitions.

Since arriving in Paris, the Russian goalkeeper has been part of a highly successful period for the club. He has collected several major trophies, including Ligue 1 titles and European and international honors.

One of the performances that attracted particular attention came in the Intercontinental Cup final against Flamengo. Safonov reportedly saved four of five penalties during the shootout, playing a decisive role in PSG’s success.

He also recently contributed to the club’s victory in the UEFA Super Cup, in which Paris Saint-Germain defeated Aston Villa 2–1. His growing involvement in major matches has increased his visibility beyond France and strengthened his position among elite European goalkeepers.

The recognition from ESPN represents an important milestone in Safonov’s career. His inclusion alongside established names such as Raya, Courtois and Donnarumma reflects the progress he has made since moving to Paris.

Safonov will now look to maintain his form as Paris Saint-Germain begins another Ligue 1 campaign. The French champions are scheduled to open their new league season against Rennes on August 23.
