Solar power becomes the European Union's largest electricity source in June
Solar energy became the largest source of electricity generation in the European Union during June, marking another milestone in the bloc's transition toward renewable energy, according to new analysis from energy think tank Ember.
The report found that solar power accounted for approximately 25% of the EU's electricity generation during the month, surpassing all other energy sources. Nuclear energy followed with around 21%, while natural gas, wind, hydropower, and coal contributed smaller shares to the overall electricity mix.
This achievement reflects the rapid expansion of solar capacity across the European Union over the past several years. Increased investment in photovoltaic technology, declining installation costs, and supportive government policies have accelerated the deployment of solar projects throughout the region.
Germany recorded particularly strong results, with solar energy reaching record shares of the country's electricity production during late spring and early summer. Similar growth has also been observed in several other EU member states as renewable energy infrastructure continues to expand.
The rise in solar generation coincided with increased electricity demand caused by widespread heatwaves across Europe. Higher temperatures boosted the use of air conditioning and cooling systems, placing additional pressure on national electricity grids.
Analysts noted that strong solar generation played a crucial role in maintaining stable electricity supplies during periods of high demand. Renewable energy helped offset pressure on other power sources, particularly at times when wind conditions were less favorable and conventional generation faced operational constraints.
The latest figures highlight the European Union's ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen energy security, and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. The bloc has made renewable energy expansion a central pillar of its climate strategy, with ambitious targets for increasing clean electricity production over the coming decade.
Energy experts expect solar capacity to continue growing as new projects come online across Europe, supported by advances in energy storage, grid modernization, and continued investment in sustainable infrastructure. The trend reinforces the increasingly important role of renewable energy in meeting Europe's future electricity needs while supporting long-term climate objectives.
