Russia-Ukraine war matches Nazi-Soviet conflict duration

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine reached 1,418 days on January 11, 2026, matching the exact length of Nazi Germany's war against the Soviet Union during World War II. President Volodymyr Zelensky marked this grim milestone by equating Moscow's tactics to 20th-century fascism, as Russian forces persist in battles for the same eastern territories targeted nearly four years ago.

In his evening address, Zelensky stated, "Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine has lasted as long as Nazi Germany's war against the Soviet Union. They wanted to repeat—and have repeated—the mockery of peoples, repeated fascism, repeated almost all the worst things that happened in the 20th century." Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941, with the Eastern Front enduring until Germany's surrender on May 9, 1945. Despite years of campaigning and vast resources, the Kremlin has failed to meet its strategic goals, turning an anticipated blitzkrieg into Europe's longest armed conflict since World War II.

Ukrainian military sources report Russia has suffered around 1,218,940 casualties since February 24, 2022, including 1,130 soldiers killed or wounded in the past day alone. Zelensky noted that since December, Russia loses at least 1,000 troops daily. "The Russians are trying to capture the same Donbas as almost four years ago," he said, with Russian forces having lost early gains in northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, now locked in grueling positional warfare in the Donbas.

As this symbolic threshold passed, Ukrainian officials advanced peace talks with Western allies in Paris, where 35 nations in the "coalition of the willing" agreed on security guarantees. France and the United Kingdom pledged to deploy troops to Ukraine in case of a ceasefire, while the United States committed to lead ceasefire monitoring efforts. Zelensky urged global partners to unite against Russia, stating that "every day of war reminds us the world cannot protect itself from madmen." Moscow has steadfastly rejected compromises on its territorial claims or any deal involving foreign troops in Ukraine.
