Strasbourg: Two Suspects Arrested After Drone Flights Near the Prison

Two men are set to appear in court this Tuesday in Strasbourg after being arrested as part of an investigation into drone flights above the local prison. This phenomenon has been disrupting nighttime aerial operations of emergency services for several weeks, preventing helicopters from the emergency medical services and civil security from reaching Hautepierre hospital at night.

Two Suspects Presented for Immediate Hearing

The two men were arrested on Tuesday, August 18, and taken into custody. The Strasbourg prosecutor's office confirmed their arrest as part of the investigation into drone flights above the city's prison.

They are scheduled to be presented at 2 PM before the Strasbourg correctional court as part of an immediate hearing procedure.

This arrest comes as drone flights have become a recurring issue in the Strasbourg penitentiary sector. Authorities are particularly looking to determine the exact role of the suspects and their potential involvement in the observed flights over the past few weeks.

Emergency Helicopters Grounded

The situation now extends well beyond just penitentiary security concerns. According to the Bas-Rhin prefecture, drones have been disrupting nighttime rotations of emergency helicopters from the medical services and civil security to the Hautepierre hospital for about three weeks.

This situation is particularly worrying for emergency services. The presence of an unidentified flying object in the area can force helicopters to alter their flight paths, especially when visibility conditions are reduced.

At night, drones are particularly difficult to spot from a helicopter. A collision could lead to an accident with potentially dramatic consequences for both the crew and the patients being transported.

A Problem That Goes Beyond the Prison

Drone flights around correctional facilities are not an isolated phenomenon. These devices can be used to smuggle items to inmates from the outside.

In Strasbourg, however, the problem takes on an additional dimension due to the proximity of hospital facilities and the movement of emergency vehicles.

The disruption of nighttime flights thus forces authorities to balance several imperatives: securing the prison, preventing aerial intrusions, and ensuring the continuity of medical and emergency missions.

Up to One Year in Prison Possible

The charges against the suspects may fall under a criminal offense sanctioning dangerous behaviors related to the operation of aircraft.

The presumed offenders face up to one year in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros, according to the information provided in the context of the procedure.

The immediate hearing is now expected to allow the justice system to examine the charges against the two men and determine the judicial follow-up.

A Situation That Worries Emergency Services

Beyond the investigation, the duration of the disruptions is a concern for emergency professionals. Helicopters play a crucial role in the rapid transport of patients and intervention in situations requiring specialized care.

In Strasbourg, the increase in drone flights is thus transforming a seemingly localized nuisance into a public safety issue. The challenge now is to put an end to the flights to allow emergency vehicles to resume their nighttime operations under normal conditions.
