Lula da Silva faces legal challenge over carnival parade ahead of election

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is facing a legal challenge over a carnival parade dedicated to his political and personal history, adding a new dispute to the opening stages of the country’s electoral campaign.

Brazilian media reported on Monday that the country’s Superior Electoral Court had accepted a complaint filed by the opposition liberal Novo Party. The party alleges that the parade amounted to unlawful political promotion because it was reportedly supported by public funding.

Lula is seeking another presidential term in the October election as the candidate of the left-wing Workers’ Party. The legal dispute could therefore add further political pressure as his campaign gains momentum.

The controversy centers on a February parade staged by the Acadêmicos de Niterói samba school during Rio de Janeiro’s famous carnival celebrations. The performance portrayed Lula’s rise from a metalworker to president of Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy.

A large statue depicting Lula with his fist raised was also carried through the Sambadrome, the iconic venue where Rio’s samba schools compete during carnival.

Eduardo Ribeiro, leader of the Novo Party, argued that the parade went beyond a cultural tribute and amounted to political promotion. According to Brazilian media reports, he claimed that public funds worth millions of reais had supported the samba school while its presentation focused specifically on Lula.

Ribeiro also criticized the president on social media, arguing that the event could have electoral consequences and questioning Lula’s eligibility to run for office.

The complaint comes at a politically sensitive moment for Brazil, where carnival has traditionally served as an important cultural and artistic platform but can also become a vehicle for social and political commentary.

The electoral court will now have to examine the allegations and determine whether the parade violated Brazilian electoral rules concerning the use of public resources or political campaigning.

The case highlights the increasingly blurred boundaries between cultural events, public financing and electoral politics in Brazil as the country approaches the presidential election.
