Spain: A 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Injures Three in Granada

Granada was once again shaken on Tuesday morning by an earthquake. The tremor, measuring 4.8 in magnitude, resulted in three minor injuries and caused several material damages, just a few days after a more powerful earthquake hit the same region.

A New Tremor Near Granada

The earthquake occurred at 10:38 local time, or 08:38 GMT. According to the Spanish National Geographic Institute, its epicenter was located in the municipality of Alhendin, about 10 kilometers south of Granada.

The tremor was strong enough to be felt in the city and its surroundings, causing panic and several damages to buildings.

Granada, one of the main tourist destinations in southern Spain, had already been affected by a slightly more powerful earthquake over the weekend.

Three Injured, Including a Hospitalized Teenager

Andalusian emergency services reported three people with minor injuries. Among them, a young girl had to be transported to the hospital for treatment.

No heavier human toll was reported in the first hours following the tremor.

However, emergency services were heavily called upon. More than 50 calls were recorded, notably reporting cracks appearing on buildings and falling debris.

Visible Damages in the Streets

Several images shared on social media show the aftermath of the tremor in different sectors of the city. Pieces of material ended up on the roadway while some vehicles were damaged by debris.

The violence felt by residents also led to numerous testimonies on social media.

A resident present in a supermarket at the time of the earthquake described a particularly impressive scene, mentioning objects and elements that seemed to collapse around her.

A Region Already Affected This Weekend

This new episode occurs in a context of high local seismic activity. Granada had already recorded a larger earthquake just a few days earlier.

The repetition of tremors naturally fuels the residents' anxiety, even though their magnitude alone does not determine the exact extent of the damages.

Authorities and emergency services remain mobilized to assess the consequences of the new tremor and check the state of potentially weakened buildings.

Increased Vigilance

In the immediate aftermath, local authorities are monitoring the situation's evolution and continuing reconnaissance operations.

The priority is to identify any additional damages and secure areas where construction elements may have fallen.

For the residents of Granada, this new tremor serves as a reminder of the region's vulnerability to seismic risk, as memories of the earthquake from the weekend are still very fresh.
