India: 15 people killed in fire and stampede during religious observances
At least 15 people were killed in two separate incidents in eastern India on Monday during religious gatherings, according to local officials.
Eight people died after a fire broke out at a hotel in Tarapith, a town in West Bengal known for its religious significance. The incident occurred as worshippers and visitors gathered in the area for religious observances.
In neighboring Bihar state, another tragedy occurred at a temple in Lakhisarai district, where a stampede left seven people dead and 19 others injured.
According to local authorities, panic spread among worshippers after rumors circulated that an electrical pole had fallen inside the temple compound. The reports triggered a sudden rush among people gathered at the site, resulting in a deadly crush.
Emergency services and local authorities responded to the incident, while the injured were taken for medical treatment. Officials are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and determine whether crowd-control measures were sufficient.
Large religious gatherings in India can attract thousands or even tens of thousands of participants, creating significant challenges for authorities responsible for managing crowds, access routes and emergency evacuation procedures.
Stampedes have repeatedly caused heavy loss of life during major religious events in the country. In 2024, one of India's deadliest recent crowd disasters occurred during a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh, where around 120 people were killed as tens of thousands of people attended the event.
The latest incidents have once again highlighted the risks associated with large gatherings and the importance of effective crowd-management systems. Authorities typically face difficulties in controlling sudden movements when rumors or emergencies trigger panic among large groups of people.
The two incidents in eastern India also underline the need for strict fire-safety measures in accommodation facilities located near major pilgrimage destinations, as well as reliable emergency procedures at religious sites.
Investigations into both incidents are expected to determine the causes of the fire and the stampede and assess whether additional safety measures are required to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
