Paul King to direct live-action film based on Labubu plush phenomenon
British filmmaker Paul King is set to direct a live-action film inspired by the globally popular Labubu plush characters, marking a major step for the viral toy phenomenon into cinema.
The project, produced by Sony Pictures in collaboration with Pop Mart, will combine live-action and computer-generated imagery to bring the distinctive characters to life. No official release date has been announced yet.
Created in 2015 by Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung, Labubu characters have gained massive popularity worldwide in recent years. Known for their “ugly-cute” aesthetic, these furry figures have become a social media sensation and a collector’s favorite, often sold in limited quantities through mystery boxes.
The brand’s rapid rise has been fueled by celebrity endorsements, with global stars such as Rihanna and Dua Lipa seen showcasing the plush toys. This visibility has contributed to long queues in stores and strong resale markets for rare editions.
With more than 100 million units sold worldwide, Labubu has become a symbol of the growing global influence of Chinese pop culture. The upcoming film aims to capitalize on this momentum, offering what producers describe as a unique cinematic experience that blends storytelling, creativity, and a globally recognized brand.
