Morocco and France Strengthen Defense Cooperation Framework
Morocco and France have further solidified their defense partnership during the 22nd session of the Joint Military Commission held in Rabat. This high-level meeting marks a renewed commitment to tackling regional and international security challenges.
The discussions were led by General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and Commander of the Southern Zone, alongside General Thierry Burkhard, Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces. The two generals expressed their satisfaction with the growing partnership between their armed forces, emphasizing its importance in maintaining robust security collaboration.
The session underlined the historical and strategic ties that have long defined Morocco and France’s defense relationship. Both nations have worked closely together to address various security concerns and have a shared vision for enhancing military cooperation. This commitment has been further reinforced by the recent state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Morocco, where he reiterated France’s full support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly with respect to the Western Sahara issue. Macron’s statement, asserting that Morocco’s sovereignty is the only feasible solution for resolving the Sahara dispute, has fueled a renewed momentum in the bilateral relationship.
The agenda of the meeting focused on reviewing achievements made in 2024 and planning joint military activities for 2025. The commission highlighted the importance of maintaining operational readiness and addressing the emerging threats that come with a complex and rapidly changing global security landscape. Both sides agreed that the defense cooperation framework established by King Mohammed VI and President Macron should be leveraged to further strengthen ties and cooperation across various military sectors.
In a separate discussion, Abdeltif Loudyi, Morocco’s Minister Delegate in Charge of National Defense Administration, met with General Burkhard to explore the potential for expanding their collaboration into new and emerging fields, such as space exploration, artificial intelligence applications for military purposes, cybersecurity, and the development of defense industries. This diversification aligns with Morocco’s goal to modernize its defense capabilities and incorporate cutting-edge technologies, with France playing a critical role in this process.
The expanded cooperation between Morocco and France also responds to growing security challenges in Africa and the wider global context. Both nations have focused on enhancing coordination in areas such as counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and peacekeeping efforts. Their strategic partnership is seen as a stabilizing force in the face of rising instability, with both countries committed to ensuring their armed forces remain adaptive and effective in confronting the evolving threats of the future.
As their defense cooperation continues to deepen, Morocco and France reaffirm their roles as key players in maintaining security and stability both within their regions and on the global stage. The outcomes of this year’s Joint Military Commission reflect the continued strength and future potential of this important defense relationship.
