Morocco Advocates for UN-Led Legitimacy in Libyan Peace Process

In a significant diplomatic move, Morocco has reaffirmed its commitment to a United Nations-led resolution for the ongoing Libyan crisis. Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, articulated this position following talks with Stephanie Khoury, the Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, in Rabat.

Bourita emphasized Morocco's unwavering stance on UN involvement, stating, "From the inter-Libyan dialogue in Skhirat to subsequent meetings in Bouznika and beyond, we have consistently championed UN oversight in all diplomatic endeavors concerning Libya."

This reaffirmation comes at a crucial juncture, with Bourita asserting that current conditions in Libya are ripe for advancing the peace process. He underscored Morocco's belief that the resolution must emanate from within Libya, primarily through legitimate elections.

Morocco's approach is rooted in its historical and human connections with Libya. Bourita highlighted the kingdom's strategy of maintaining respectful and credible relationships with all Libyan institutions and parties, operating on principles of mutual respect. This approach aims to address critical security and economic challenges facing Libya, as well as the urgent social demands of its people.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister also drew attention to the broader implications of the Libyan crisis, noting its significant impact on the security and stability of North Africa and the Sahel. "Resolving this crisis is not merely a national priority for Libya, but a regional imperative," Bourita stated.

The discussions between Bourita and Khoury were part of a working visit aimed at enhancing coordination and consultation between Morocco and the UN, reflecting the high directives of King Mohammed VI. This collaborative effort underscores Morocco's role as a key player in fostering stability in the region.

Bourita concluded by emphasizing the importance of injecting new momentum into the peace process through joint efforts. He reiterated that Morocco's actions concerning Libya are always conducted in consultation with the UN, recognizing its role as the primary sponsor of the Libyan peace process.

As the situation in Libya continues to evolve, Morocco's advocacy for a UN-led legitimacy in the peace process stands as a testament to its commitment to diplomatic solutions and regional stability. This stance not only reinforces Morocco's position as a significant diplomatic player but also highlights the complex interplay of national, regional, and international interests in resolving the Libyan crisis.
