HM King Mohammed VI declares December 9 as national mediation day

HM King Mohammed VI has approved the creation of a National Day of Public Service Mediation, to be observed every year on December 9.
The chosen date marks the anniversary of the establishment of Diwan Al Madhalim in 2001, an institution that later evolved into Morocco’s national Ombudsman. Its symbolic timing reflects both the country’s commitment to strengthening human rights and its desire to anchor this initiative within the institutional memory of the nation.

According to the statement issued by the Ombudsman of the Kingdom, the decision honors the central role played by institutional mediation in promoting fairness, transparency and respect for the rule of law. The royal approval is also viewed as an important milestone in a long process aimed at reinforcing a public-service culture rooted in justice and equality.

Since its creation, Diwan Al Madhalim—and later the constitutionally recognized Ombudsman—has expanded its mission, becoming one of the independent bodies dedicated to defending citizens’ rights and ensuring ethical governance. The annual National Day will therefore serve as an opportunity to highlight best practices in public mediation, encourage wider public dialogue, and assess progress in administrative reform.

The event is also expected to provide a platform for evaluating the efforts undertaken so far and for generating new proposals to strengthen citizen-focused administration. The initiative ultimately aims to reinforce a system where fairness, accountability, and the protection of rights remain central pillars of public service.
