Global faith leaders gather in Kazakhstan to foster peace and interfaith understanding
The eighth Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions commenced today in Astana, Kazakhstan, uniting over 100 delegations from 60 countries to promote dialogue, tolerance, and cooperation among diverse religions and cultures.
A global platform for interfaith harmony
Chaired by Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the congress gathers prominent religious leaders, scholars, and public figures to address global challenges through mutual understanding. In his opening remarks, Tokayev emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue in a world increasingly beset by conflicts and divisions. He praised the participants for their dedication to fostering interfaith harmony and religious tolerance, both in Kazakhstan and on the global stage.
Pope Leo XIV, one of the key speakers, highlighted the significance of interreligious dialogue in addressing today’s societal fractures. He urged collaboration rooted in solidarity, emphasizing that diversity should serve as a source of mutual enrichment rather than division.
“When religious leaders stand together to defend the vulnerable, care for our shared environment, or uphold human dignity, they demonstrate the unifying power of faith,” Pope Leo XIV said.
An inclusive gathering of faiths
Delegations at the congress represent a wide range of religions, including Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, and Shinto. Among the distinguished attendees are Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb.
The event’s agenda includes the 23rd session of the Secretariat, chaired by Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev, and a special session by the UN Alliance of Civilizations on safeguarding religious sites. Breakout discussions will explore pressing issues such as sustainable development, the digital age’s impact on spiritual values, and the role of faith in combating extremism.
Recognizing contributions to peace
The congress will feature the presentation of the Astana International Award for Interfaith Dialogue, along with state honors and the Congress Medal of Honour. Certificates will also be awarded to new Goodwill Ambassadors for their contributions to interfaith dialogue.
The event will culminate in the adoption of a final declaration and a formal closing ceremony, underscoring its role as a vital forum for fostering global peace and understanding.
