European Film Weeks mark their 31st edition in Morocco
The European Film Weeks will return to Morocco for their 31st edition from January 28 to February 11, 2026, reaffirming their status as a major cultural event in the country. Organized by the European Union in Morocco, the festival will take place in Casablanca, Marrakech and Rabat, showcasing a selection of contemporary European auteur cinema.
This year’s edition will open with Sentimental Value, the latest film by Danish-Norwegian director Joachim Trier. The film has drawn significant international attention after winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and receiving multiple nominations at major awards ceremonies, including the Golden Globes and the European Film Awards.
Joachim Trier is widely regarded as one of the leading voices of European cinema, known for films such as Reprise, Oslo, August 31st and The Worst Person in the World. His new feature, a European co-production, explores family relationships through an intimate narrative centered on two sisters confronted with the return of their estranged father, a renowned filmmaker. The cast includes acclaimed actors from across Europe and beyond, reinforcing the film’s international dimension.
According to the EU Ambassador to Morocco, the European Film Weeks go beyond the traditional role of a film festival. They serve as a platform for cultural dialogue, using cinema to strengthen connections between Europe, Morocco and the Mediterranean region, and to promote mutual understanding across societies.
For more than three decades, the event has played a key role in introducing Moroccan audiences to European independent cinema that is rarely shown in commercial theaters. The program combines recent productions, emerging voices and short films from the southern Mediterranean, highlighting new talents and diverse perspectives.
The full lineup for this 31st edition, which will tour the three host cities, is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
