Deadly high-speed train collision in southern Spain leaves 39 dead
At least 39 people have lost their lives and dozens more were seriously injured following a violent collision between two high-speed trains in southern Spain, according to Spanish authorities.
The accident occurred near the town of Adamuz, in the Andalusia region, when a train traveling northbound derailed and struck another train moving in the opposite direction on a neighboring track. The impact caused several carriages to leave the rails, trapping passengers inside damaged wagons.
Emergency services were rapidly deployed to the scene, where rescue teams worked throughout the night to evacuate the injured. Officials confirmed that all passengers requiring hospital care were transferred to nearby medical facilities, with around 30 people reported in critical condition.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the incident as a moment of “deep national sorrow,” while transport authorities suspended high-speed rail services linking Madrid with several southern cities as investigations began.
Rail safety experts have emphasized the importance of determining the exact causes of the collision, as Spain operates one of the largest high-speed rail networks in Europe.
