Bank fees soar again in 2025, outpacing inflation
Bank charges in France have risen sharply once again in 2025, dealing another blow to household purchasing power. According to data from the French National Institute of Statistics (Insee), banking fees increased by an average of 3.1%between June 2024 and June 2025—three times higher than inflation, which stood at 1%.
Over two years, between 2023 and mid-2025, the cumulative rise reached 6.2%, twice the overall inflation rate during the same period. After keeping their rates relatively stable in 2023, when inflation was high, banks appear to have caught up in 2024 and 2025.
The Banking Fees Observatory (OTB) analyzed data from 103 institutions as of April 1, 2025. It found that ten out of fourteen key fees had increased, while only four remained stable or decreased. Among the most significant hikes are account maintenance fees, which have continued to rise steeply since late 2024.
Experts warn that these rising costs could further weaken household budgets at a time when interest rates remain high and economic growth is slowing. Consumer associations are calling for greater transparency and regulation to protect users from what they describe as “unjustified increases” in everyday banking costs.
