Agdal district in Fez uses local culture to reinvent urban space
The district of Fez is placing culture at the center of its urban development strategy through the “Spring of Agdal 2026” festival, an initiative designed to strengthen community identity, revitalize public spaces and preserve local heritage.
Organized from May 13 to May 17, the event goes beyond traditional entertainment by promoting a broader vision that combines cultural preservation, digital innovation and environmental awareness. Under the theme “Agdal… the pulse of the present in the spirit of ancestral Fez,” local authorities aim to transform culture into a tool for social cohesion and sustainable territorial development.
The program reflects a multidimensional approach to urban life. One of the first activities honors retired municipal employees in recognition of their contribution to the district’s administrative and social history. Organizers also highlight one of Fez’s most symbolic traditions: the distillation of orange blossom water, a practice deeply connected to the city’s historical identity and artisanal heritage.
Digital transformation also plays a key role in this year’s edition. Workshops and scientific meetings dedicated to the digital preservation of cultural heritage are scheduled throughout the festival. Officials will additionally present a project focused on digitizing the archives of the Agdal district in an effort to protect institutional memory and improve access to historical records.
Environmental issues are another major component of the event. Awareness visits are being organized in gardens and green spaces across the district to encourage ecological responsibility and improve urban quality of life. Local authorities view these initiatives as part of a broader effort to integrate environmental concerns into cultural and territorial policies.
Several public spaces in Fez, including Avenue Hassan II, Avenue Allal Ben Abdallah and the Latin Garden, will host folk performances and artistic activities aimed at reconnecting residents with the urban environment. The initiative seeks to restore the street as a place of cultural expression, social interaction and civic engagement.
The festival also includes sports and youth activities organized in partnership with Euromed University of Fez. Organizers hope these programs will encourage young people to become more involved in local cultural life while strengthening ties between academic institutions and the community.
The closing ceremony on May 17 will feature performances dedicated to Malhoun and traditional Moroccan music. Through this event, local officials hope to establish “Spring of Agdal” as a long-term cultural platform capable of preserving intangible heritage while encouraging citizens to reclaim and reimagine public urban spaces.
According to district officials, the initiative reflects a vision that balances historical legacy with modern urban challenges in a city where culture remains an essential driver of attractiveness and regional influence.
