Train collision in Bangkok leaves at least eight dead

At least eight people were killed after a freight train collided with a bus and several vehicles near a busy railway crossing in Bangkok on Saturday, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred near the highly frequented Makkasan station area, an important transportation hub used by residents and tourists traveling to and from the airport. Officials said the freight train struck vehicles that were crossing the tracks at a congested railway intersection.

Preliminary reports indicate that the safety barrier at the crossing was not lowered at the time of the incident, allowing traffic to remain on the tracks as the train approached. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes of the collision and whether technical failures or human error contributed to the tragedy.

Emergency teams and firefighters quickly arrived at the scene after the impact triggered flames and heavy smoke around the damaged vehicles. Images from surveillance cameras reportedly showed passengers being thrown from the bus during the collision before the vehicle caught fire.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as motorists attempted to move nearby vehicles away from the tracks to avoid further damage. A public transport bus and at least one car were severely damaged by the fire following the crash.
