Canada reports suspected Hantavirus case in MV Hondius passenger
Health authorities in Canada have reported that a passenger from the cruise ship MV Hondius has been placed under quarantine and is “presumed positive” for hantavirus infection, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.
The passenger was among a group of individuals identified as being at high risk after being exposed during a voyage aboard the MV Hondius, a vessel that had departed from Argentina in early April with passengers and crew on board. The ship later became associated with a suspected hantavirus outbreak during its Atlantic crossing.
Officials stated that the woman was hospitalized in western Canada after developing symptoms consistent with the Andes strain of hantavirus. Her partner, who was also aboard the ship and is showing mild symptoms, has been placed under medical supervision alongside her.
A third individual who had been in quarantine has also been hospitalized for further medical evaluation. Health authorities emphasized that all confirmed and suspected cases are being closely monitored in isolation to prevent potential spread.
Hantavirus infections are rare but potentially severe diseases typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated environments. Authorities continue to investigate the source and possible exposure pathways linked to the cruise ship.
