Modena Attack: Giorgia Meloni cancels Cyprus visit to meet victims
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has cancelled an official trip to Cyprus in order to visit victims injured in a serious incident in Modena, in northern Italy. The decision follows an attack involving a driver who struck several pedestrians in the city center, causing multiple severe injuries.
Authorities described the event as extremely serious. According to official statements, the driver, who reportedly has a history of psychiatric disorders, lost control of his vehicle and hit several people before crashing into a shopfront. One of the victims is reported to be in critical condition, with medical teams confirming that she may require the amputation of both legs.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the incident, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families. She also praised the quick response of citizens who intervened to stop the driver, as well as the police forces for their rapid action at the scene.
The Italian government has expressed confidence that the individual responsible will be held fully accountable under the law. The incident has sparked renewed debate in Italy about urban safety and mental health monitoring systems for individuals with prior psychiatric issues.
