Morocco accelerates energy transition with new 90 MW solar project
The Morocco is continuing to strengthen its energy transition strategy through the development of a new 90-megawatt solar project, reflecting the country’s growing role in renewable energy across Africa.
The project involves a partnership with Chinese photovoltaic manufacturer Jinko Solar, which has signed an agreement to supply next-generation solar panels for the installation. The initiative highlights the increasing cooperation between Morocco and global energy companies in the clean energy sector.
The solar facility will use advanced “Tiger Neo 3.0” modules based on N-Type TOPCon technology, known for high efficiency, durability, and improved long-term energy performance. These technologies are expected to enhance electricity generation while reducing operational losses over time.
Morocco’s renewable energy strategy aims to increase the share of clean energy to more than 52% of the national electricity mix by 2030. This long-term policy focuses on reducing dependence on fossil fuels, improving energy security, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The new project is expected to contribute significantly to national electricity production at a time of rising energy demand. It will also help stabilize the national power grid and reduce long-term generation costs through improved efficiency.
Jinko Solar is one of the world’s leading solar technology companies, with operations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The company is particularly known for designing solar solutions suitable for hot climates, making its technology well adapted to North African conditions.
In recent years, Morocco has become one of the most dynamic renewable energy markets in the region, attracting increasing foreign investment. The country has also recorded a steady rise in solar panel imports, mainly from China, reflecting the rapid expansion of photovoltaic infrastructure.
According to energy market data, Morocco imported around 1 gigawatt of solar capacity in 2025, ranking among the top importers in the Arab region. Growth continued in early 2026, with imports increasing by 46% compared to the previous year, confirming the strong momentum of the country’s green energy transition.
Experts say these developments demonstrate Morocco’s ambition to position itself as a regional leader in renewable energy and a key hub for sustainable electricity production in Africa.
