Automation ends toll booth staffing on Ile de Re Bridge
A major shift in infrastructure management is underway in France as toll operations on the Île de Ré Bridge become fully automated, marking the end of on-site toll booth staff.
Starting Monday, no agents will remain in the toll cabins of the bridge, one of the last locations in the country where manual payment collection was still in place. The transition follows a modernization project launched in 2025 by the local authorities of Charente-Maritime, aimed at improving efficiency and traffic flow.
The project, which includes the installation of automated payment terminals across all lanes, reflects a broader trend toward digitalization in transport infrastructure. Officials say the goal is to ensure continuous access to all toll lanes throughout the year, reducing disruptions linked to staffing constraints.
The Île de Ré Bridge, inaugurated in 1988, has seen a steady increase in traffic over the decades. Annual usage has more than doubled, reaching millions of vehicles each year, particularly during peak tourist seasons.
While automation is expected to enhance service efficiency, it also brings changes for workers. Many temporary toll operators had contracts tied to the manual system, and staffing levels are being reduced as roles shift toward monitoring and maintenance rather than direct payment collection.
Some employees have expressed mixed feelings about the transition, acknowledging improved working conditions but also the loss of human interaction with drivers. The move reflects a broader transformation in public services, where technology is reshaping traditional jobs.
Experts note that similar automation initiatives are being adopted across Europe, as authorities seek to modernize infrastructure, reduce operational costs, and adapt to increasing traffic demands.
