Julián Álvarez: Atlético Madrid says no to Barça and rejects all negotiations

The tug-of-war over Julián Álvarez has taken a new turn. Atlético Madrid officially confirmed on Thursday, August 27, 2026, that it would not negotiate the transfer of its Argentine striker with FC Barcelona, despite the Catalan club's ongoing interest and a reported offer of 100 million euros. The club's board has unanimously supported this position.

Atlético Madrid firmly rejects Barça

In a statement, Atlético Madrid indicated that no negotiations had taken place with FC Barcelona and that there would be none regarding Julián Álvarez. However, the club claims to remain open to discussions within the normal framework of the transfer market, provided that exchanges occur, according to its own terms, in an ethical, professional, and respectful manner between clubs.

This decision comes on the heels of new statements from Joan Laporta. The president of Barça confirmed that his club remains interested in the Argentine international and maintains a proposal estimated at 100 million euros.

However, the amount no longer seems to be the main obstacle. As early as July, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, Atlético's general manager, stated that the club would not accept an offer of 100 million euros, nor even 150 or 200 million, emphasizing the desire to retain the player.

A conflict that goes beyond financial issues

For Atlético, the matter has now also become one of method. The club accuses FC Barcelona of attempting to contact the player and his entourage while he was still under contract with the Madrid team.

This accusation has already led Atlético to take steps with football authorities. In June, the club announced its intention to approach FIFA, believing that Barça had negotiated with Álvarez during a period that the Madrid executives considered protected.

The case has also taken on a disciplinary dimension in Spain. At the end of July, the Royal Spanish Football Federation opened a procedure against FC Barcelona following the complaint filed by Atlético Madrid.

Julián Álvarez at the center of tensions

Arriving at Atlético Madrid in 2024 from Manchester City, Julián Álvarez quickly established himself as one of the club's key offensive figures. According to data reported by Reuters, the striker has scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists in 107 appearances in the rojiblanco jersey.

However, his future has become uncertain. The Argentine is said to have expressed his desire to join FC Barcelona, a prospect that has contributed to deteriorating his relationships with some Madrid supporters. He was notably confronted by some fans during a recent match at the Metropolitano Stadium.

The striker also missed training for two days, officially due to illness, as speculation about his future mounts with the transfer window closing in.

Barça faces a now-locked door

For FC Barcelona, this decision seriously complicates the search for a new striker capable of gradually taking over from Robert Lewandowski. The Catalan club had made Julián Álvarez a priority and continues to publicly express its interest.

But Atlético's position now appears particularly firm. The Madrid club still has a contract with the Argentine striker running until 2030, accompanied by a particularly high release clause.

Other suitors may still try their luck. Arsenal is notably among the clubs associated with the case, although a potential move to London would also depend on the player's willingness, whose preference for Barcelona is frequently mentioned.

With just a few days left before the transfer window closes, the Álvarez case remains highly charged. For Atlético Madrid, the priority is now clear: to maintain its position and prevent the situation from further destabilizing the club. For Barça, it is about determining whether they can still find a way out of a case whose main interlocutor has officially closed the door.
