Early Diet May Influence Cancer Risk Decades Later
The diet during the early years of life could have effects that extend well beyond childhood. A study reported on Wednesday, August 26, by Science Daily suggests that limited exposure to sugar before the age of 2 is associated, several decades later, with a decreased risk of certain diseases, including several forms of cancer and diabetes.
To explore this long-term question, researchers adopted an approach based on a specific period in British history. After World War II, the UK maintained a sugar rationing system until 1953. The end of these restrictions subsequently led to an increase in the consumption of sugary products among the population.
The scientists examined health data from approximately 64,000 Britons born between 1951 and 1956. This period allowed them to compare individuals who experienced different levels of sugar exposure early in life due to rationing.
The results revealed a lower incidence of several cancers among those who spent a longer period of their early childhood in a context of reduced sugar consumption. Researchers specifically mention breast, prostate, liver, rectal, and lung cancers.
The most striking finding concerns liver cancer. According to the data reported in the study, individuals born during the rationing period had a 69% lower risk of developing this disease. A decrease in diabetes risk was also observed.
The first two years of life constitute a crucial phase of body development and the establishment of dietary habits. Preferences acquired during this period can, according to researchers, have a lasting influence on consumption behaviors.
The study thus highlights the potential role of early diet in long-term health. Moderate sugar consumption in the early years could not only help establish more balanced eating habits but also be associated with a reduction in certain health risks throughout life.
However, the conclusions should be interpreted within the framework of this observational study, based on the analysis of a specific historical situation. Nevertheless, they reinforce the growing interest in scientific research regarding the influence of early years on adult health.
