Kenya Tightens Controls Against Banned Pesticides

Kenya is strengthening its strategy to combat the entry of unauthorized pesticides into its territory. In response to the risk of the country becoming a destination for banned chemicals or those rejected by other markets, authorities have announced stricter border controls.

The decision was presented on Tuesday by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mutahi Kagwe. The government aims to enhance the monitoring of goods entering the country to prevent the import of pesticides that do not meet existing standards and regulations.

Enhanced Monitoring at Entry Points

Kenyan authorities have already recorded a significant reduction in imports of unauthorized pesticides. According to Fredrick Muchiri, Director General of the Pest Control Products Board, these imports have decreased by approximately 95%.

This decline is largely attributed to the strengthening of control measures and the presence of regulatory agents at ten border posts and key entry points into the country. This increased surveillance has helped limit the channels used to introduce banned or non-compliant pesticides.

Towards Regional Harmonization of Regulations

Beyond national control, the Kenyan government is also advocating for better coordination of regulations within the East African Community (EAC).

The goal is to prevent substances rejected in certain countries from circulating to other markets in the region due to differences in regulatory frameworks. For Nairobi, harmonizing rules would provide an additional lever in the fight against the circulation of chemicals deemed non-compliant.

Through this policy, Kenya is demonstrating its commitment to strengthening the protection of its agricultural market and better controlling the pesticides introduced into its territory. The continuation of this strategy should thus rely on both increased border surveillance and enhanced regulatory cooperation at the regional level.
