Mercosur-Singapore: Argentina Approves Trade Agreement with Asia

Argentina has taken a new step in its trade opening strategy. The Parliament has ratified the free trade agreement signed between Mercosur and Singapore, paving the way for a gradual strengthening of exchanges between the South American bloc and one of the main economic hubs of Southeast Asia.

The text, approved by the Senate in May and then adopted by the Chamber of Deputies with a large majority of 234 votes to four, constitutes the first trade agreement concluded by Mercosur with a country in this region of the world.

Signed in Rio de Janeiro on December 7, 2023, after five years of negotiations, the agreement provides for a gradual liberalization of about 96% of product exchanges between the two parties. The reduction of tariffs may extend over a period of up to fifteen years, depending on the sectors involved.

Beyond goods trade, the partnership also covers services, investments, and public procurement. It also provides for the simplification of certain customs procedures as well as a framework aimed at making trade rules more predictable for businesses.

The treaty also includes provisions related to e-commerce, intellectual property, sanitary and technical standards, as well as cooperation to support micro, small, and medium enterprises.

For supporters of the text, this agreement goes beyond mere tariff issues. Deputy Santiago Cafiero sees it as a new direction for regional economic integration and a model that could inspire future Mercosur trade partnerships.

His colleague Damián Arabia has presented the agreement as a strategic opportunity to support the economic development of Argentine provinces and strengthen their access to international markets.

This ratification thus confirms Argentina's interest in diversifying its trade outlets and reinforces Mercosur's strategy to consolidate its economic ties with Asia, in a context of reshaping international exchanges.
