FIFA: Saudi Arabia Backs Gianni Infantino Amid Governance Criticism
The Saudi Football Federation expressed its support for Gianni Infantino on Thursday, as the FIFA president faces increasing opposition ahead of the presidential election scheduled for March 2027. This stance comes after the abandonment of a controversial project aimed at opening up World Cup revenue-related commercial activities to private investors.
In a statement, the Saudi body praised the Italian-Swiss leader's decision to withdraw this proposal. It also highlighted the acknowledgment of mistakes made and the apologies offered, viewing these elements as a step toward easing tensions within global football governance.
The Saudi Federation now calls for a return to unity within the football community and asserts its support for the continuation of reforms and the development of the discipline on an international scale.
A Controversy Over Revenue Management
The project abandoned by Gianni Infantino had sparked strong reactions among various stakeholders in global football. His critics accused him of considering, without sufficient consultation, a commercial restructuring that could place part of the World Cup revenues in a structure open to private investors.
Even after the withdrawal of this initiative, criticisms regarding FIFA's governance continue to fuel the debate. Several of the most influential European federations have distanced themselves from Gianni Infantino in light of the upcoming presidential election in 2027.
At this stage, however, the FIFA president remains the only officially declared candidate for this election.
Saudi Arabia, a Strategic Supporter
Riyadh's support comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is playing an increasingly significant role in the international football ecosystem. The country, which will host the World Cup in 2034, has been ramping up investments in sports, both in terms of infrastructure and the development of its national league.
The arrival of major international figures, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, has notably helped enhance the visibility of the Saudi Pro League on the global stage.
Also supported by several African football bodies, Gianni Infantino thus retains significant international backing. However, as the 2027 election approaches, questions about his governance and ability to maintain balance among different federations are likely to remain at the heart of the debates.
