Spain: The Villena Treasure Stolen in a Lightning-Fast Burglary
One of the most remarkable sets of jewelry from the Bronze Age in Europe was targeted in a spectacular burglary in southeastern Spain. The Villena Treasure, housed in a museum in the province of Alicante, was stolen either completely or partially during an operation that took just a few minutes on Thursday morning.
According to local authorities, the museum's alarm went off around 5:20 AM. Four minutes later, the perpetrators had already left the scene. The municipality of Villena describes the operation as particularly quick and organized, while investigators are now trying to accurately assess the extent of the damage.
An Ongoing Inventory to Measure the Extent of the Theft
At the time of the initial findings, authorities were not yet able to confirm whether the entire Villena Treasure had disappeared or if only certain pieces had been taken. An inventory has been initiated inside the museum to determine exactly which items are missing.
Municipal officials assured that the site's security systems had been triggered correctly and that no failure had been detected in the protection systems.
However, another lead interests investigators. An alarm had gone off shortly before the burglary at a sports complex in Villena. Police are trying to determine whether this incident may have been deliberately caused to divert attention and facilitate the operation against the museum.
An Exceptional Heritage Dating Back Over 3,000 Years
Dating back to around 1000 BC, the Villena Treasure is a major testament to Bronze Age jewelry-making. The collection includes nearly fifty objects made primarily of gold, but also of silver and iron.
Among the most emblematic pieces are 29 bracelets, eleven bowls, and three containers, along with several other precious items. For specialists, this collection holds a special place in European archaeological heritage and is often compared in significance to treasures found in the royal tombs of Mycenae, Greece.
The disappearance, even if partial, of these items represents a major issue, both in terms of heritage and history.
A Major Archaeological Discovery Since 1963
The Villena Treasure was discovered in 1963 by Spanish archaeologist José María Soler. The objects were found in a container hidden in the bed of a ravine in this locality of the Valencia region.
More than six decades after its discovery, this exceptional heritage is now at the center of a criminal investigation. Spanish authorities continue their investigations to identify the perpetrators of the burglary and recover any possibly stolen pieces.
