The recent arrival of a prominent Moroccan delegation in Dakar not only underscored the deepening ties between the North African nation and its West African counterpart but also marked a significant step forward in diplomatic relations. Senegalese President Macky Sall graciously welcomed the visitors at his presidential palace on Monday evening, setting the stage for a groundbreaking decentralization conference.

In a statement from Sall's office, the warm reception was described as a testament to the "historic and excellent relations" between Morocco and Senegal. The event kickstarted three days of intensive discussions focusing on decentralization policies designed to empower local authorities in both countries.

Leading the delegation was Abdelouahhab El Jabri, a key figure in Morocco's recent efforts to delegate more governance powers to its regions and municipalities. Accompanying him were a diverse group of mayors, regional councilors, and heads of agencies overseeing funding and infrastructure for local administrations.

During his brief remarks, President Sall highlighted the significance of this being the second high-profile Moroccan mission to visit Senegal this month, following a 70-strong cultural delegation's participation in a regional arts festival.

“We are touched by this, and it shows the importance that Morocco, a brotherly country, attaches to its relationship with Senegal,” remarked Sall.

He specifically commended Morocco’s “very proactive policy in terms of decentralization and, above all, regional planning,” earning international praise. Sall also requested the delegation to convey a message of “friendship and gratitude” to Morocco’s King Mohammed VI.

With President Sall's welcoming tone creating a positive atmosphere, the three-day conference is poised for substantive exchanges on empowering municipalities. Morocco's decision to dispatch a heavyweight delegation signals its ambition to solidify diplomatic ties with a strategic Francophone partner in West Africa. The blossoming relations between Rabat and Dakar are expected to continue flourishing throughout the week.
