Deadly Knife Attack in Eastern China School Leaves Eight Dead and 17 Injured
A knife attack perpetrated by a former student at a school in eastern China claimed the lives of eight individuals and left 17 others injured on Saturday, according to local authorities. The assailant was apprehended at the scene.
While such deadly assaults are generally rare in China, this tragic incident marks the second mass killing in the country this week. On Monday, a car-ramming attack resulted in 35 deaths in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
Saturday’s attack occurred at 6:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. GMT) at the Wuxi Arts and Technology Institute in Yixing, Jiangsu Province. The local police confirmed the details in a statement, stating, “The attack left eight people dead and 17 injured. The suspect was arrested on-site.”
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect, a 21-year-old member of the class of 2024, committed the attack after failing to graduate and feeling dissatisfied with the pay he received during an internship. Authorities noted that the individual "returned to the school to express his anger and carry out these killings."
The suspect has confessed to the crime, and police are now focusing on supporting the victims, managing the aftermath of the tragedy, and conducting a thorough investigation into the case.
China, despite its reputation for overall safety, has witnessed a number of deadly attacks in recent months. Earlier this week, a 62-year-old man drove an SUV into a group of people exercising outdoors in Zhuhai, killing 35 and injuring over 40. In another recent incident, a knife attack in a Shanghai supermarket left three dead and 15 injured.
