Trump says Washington is reviewing its position on the Falkland Islands amid tensions with Britain
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Washington is reviewing its longstanding position on the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, a move that could potentially affect relations with both Britain and Argentina.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he was constantly reassessing U.S. positions when asked about the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago, which has been administered by Britain since the 19th century. He did not indicate whether the review would lead to an immediate change in American policy.
Argentina, led by President Javier Milei, continues to claim sovereignty over the islands, which it calls the Malvinas. The dispute has remained a sensitive issue between Buenos Aires and London since Argentina and Britain fought a war over the territory in 1982.
For decades, Washington has avoided formally taking sides in the sovereignty dispute. Any significant shift in that position could therefore carry diplomatic implications, particularly given the close political relationship between Trump and Milei.
Trump's remarks followed reports that U.S. officials had previously considered several options for putting pressure on NATO allies over disagreements concerning support for American military operations. One of the reported possibilities involved reconsidering Washington's position on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands.
However, the president did not confirm that the United States had decided to recognize Argentina's sovereignty claim. A policy review does not necessarily mean that Washington is preparing to abandon its traditional approach to the dispute.
The Falkland Islands remain strategically important because of their location in the South Atlantic and their proximity to Argentina. For Britain, maintaining control over the islands is a longstanding matter of sovereignty, while Argentina considers the territory an integral part of its national claim.
Any change in the U.S. position would likely attract significant attention in London and Buenos Aires, particularly as Washington continues to balance its relations with both European allies and governments in Latin America.
