Democratic lawmakers move to block Trump from renaming Lake Ontario

Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced legislation aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from changing the official name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

The proposed bill, known as the “Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act,” would prohibit the president, the secretary of the interior and other federal officials from altering the names of the five Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Ontario.

The initiative follows an executive order by Trump seeking to rename Lake Ontario. The move has also drawn attention from digital mapping services, with Google Maps reportedly displaying the body of water under the proposed name for users in the United States, following a similar change involving the Gulf of Mexico, which was renamed the “Gulf of America” by the administration.

Democratic lawmakers backing the legislation criticized the renaming effort as unnecessary and politically distracting. Representatives Debbie Dingell, Timothy Kennedy and Joseph Morelle argued that changing the name of a major geographic landmark would do little to address issues affecting American households, such as high living costs, employment and consumer prices.

The dispute also comes amid heightened economic tensions between the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes form an important part of the economic and transportation relationship between the two countries, supporting shipping, manufacturing, tourism and communities along both sides of the border.

The lawmakers have linked the naming controversy to broader disagreements over U.S. trade policy toward Canada. Tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian imports have raised concerns about higher costs for businesses and consumers, while Canadian authorities have considered retaliatory measures.

Lake Ontario is one of North America's five Great Lakes and lies between the U.S. state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. Its waters are connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the St. Lawrence River, making the lake strategically important for regional transportation and commerce.

The proposed legislation is therefore not only about the name of a geographic landmark but also reflects wider political tensions surrounding the Trump administration's approach to executive authority, relations with Canada and the symbolism attached to American geographic names.

Whether the bill will advance through Congress remains uncertain, particularly given the political divisions in Washington. For its Democratic sponsors, however, the measure represents an effort to preserve the traditional names of the Great Lakes and prevent unilateral changes to landmarks shared by the United States and Canada.
