Madrid business leaders join protest supporting Ceuta amid economic crisis

Business representatives in Madrid are expected to take part in a protest scheduled for September 2 in support of the private sector in Ceuta, amid the economic difficulties linked to the city's recent migration crisis.

According to Spanish media reports, the Madrid Business Forum has announced its participation in the demonstration, joining several civil society groups and other organizations calling attention to the difficulties faced by companies operating in the Spanish-administered North African enclave.

The protest is expected to coincide with Ceuta's city day and will bring together representatives from different sectors who want to highlight the economic impact of the current situation. Labor unions, including the Workers' Commissions, are also expected to support related demonstrations taking place in Ceuta.

Figures cited by the Ceuta Chamber of Commerce put the economic losses linked to the crisis at around €33 million. The trade and hotel sectors have reportedly experienced declines of more than 50 percent, while tourism has suffered an estimated 90 percent drop.

The chamber revised its assessment after examining real data from 302 companies, representing approximately 9.3 percent of Ceuta's local economic fabric. The updated figures indicate that the impact has been more severe than initially estimated.

One of the largest revisions concerns the cancellation of a trade fair in Ceuta. Losses associated with the event were initially estimated at €10.4 million but were later placed at approximately €15.7 million, representing an increase of about 51 percent.

Business organizations argue that the scale of the losses demonstrates the need for greater attention to the challenges confronting the city's private sector. The planned demonstration in Madrid is intended to give visibility to these concerns and express solidarity with businesses affected by the downturn.

The expected participation of business leaders alongside trade unions and civil society organizations could give the protests a broader social dimension. Organizers hope that the demonstrations will draw attention to the economic consequences of the crisis and encourage measures aimed at supporting local companies and restoring commercial activity.

The situation also highlights the particular economic sensitivity of Ceuta, whose businesses depend heavily on cross-border movement, tourism and trade. Any prolonged disruption can therefore have significant consequences for employment, hospitality and retail activity.
