Moroccan diaspora remittances reach nearly 75 billion dirhams

Remittances sent by Moroccans living abroad continued to grow during the first seven months of 2026, providing an important source of foreign currency for the Moroccan economy.

According to the latest figures released by Morocco’s Foreign Exchange Office, transfers from Moroccans residing abroad reached 74.78 billion dirhams by the end of July 2026, compared with 69.17 billion dirhams during the same period a year earlier. This represents an annual increase of 8.1%.

The rise in remittances comes alongside stronger performance in Morocco’s tourism sector. The country recorded a positive travel balance of 59.08 billion dirhams during the period, up 15.7% compared with the previous year.

Travel revenues increased by 13.4% to 79.009 billion dirhams, while tourism-related expenditure rose by 7.3% to 19.92 billion dirhams. The figures point to continued growth in international tourism activity and its contribution to Morocco’s external accounts.

Foreign direct investment also recorded significant growth. Net foreign direct investment inflows reached 29.47 billion dirhams, representing an increase of 58.5% year on year. The improvement was driven by a 6.3% rise in investment revenues and a sharp 47% decline in investment-related expenditures.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s net direct investment flows abroad stood at 6.86 billion dirhams, compared with 2.76 billion dirhams during the same period in 2025.

The latest figures highlight the continued importance of Moroccans living abroad to the national economy. Alongside tourism revenues and foreign investment, remittances remain one of the country's key sources of external financing and help support household consumption, investment and the balance of payments.

The sustained increase in these financial flows also reflects the strong economic links between Morocco and its diaspora, whose contribution remains significant despite changes in the international economic environment.
