Messi receives emotional support from his wife after international retirement announcement

Lionel Messi has received an emotional message from his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, following his decision to bring an end to his international career with Argentina after two decades of remarkable achievements.

Roccuzzo shared a heartfelt tribute on social media alongside photographs of Messi with their children, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro. She expressed deep pride in her husband’s journey, recalling the difficult moments he experienced throughout his career as well as the determination that allowed him to overcome setbacks and continue pursuing his ambitions.

In her message, Roccuzzo highlighted Messi’s resilience, describing how she had watched him struggle, fall and rise again whenever things did not go according to plan. She also celebrated the opportunity to witness some of the happiest moments of his career and their family life together.

Messi’s international career has been marked by numerous major achievements with Argentina. Among his most significant successes are the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima. He also won Olympic gold with Argentina at the 2008 Beijing Games and the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2005.

The Argentine captain’s future with the national team had been the subject of speculation following the 2026 World Cup. Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia said earlier in August that the decision would ultimately be Messi’s personal choice and that the federation would not pressure him to continue.

For Messi, the announcement represents the possible conclusion of one of the most decorated international careers in football history. For his family, meanwhile, it marks the end of a long and demanding journey filled with sporting triumphs, disappointments and unforgettable moments.

Roccuzzo’s message underlined the personal dimension behind Messi’s career, emphasizing not only his achievements on the pitch but also the perseverance and character that accompanied him throughout his years with Argentina.
