Russia, China and Mongolia to hold joint border cooperation drills in September
Russia, China and Mongolia are set to conduct joint military exercises in September under the name “Border Cooperation 2026,” according to China’s Ministry of National Defense.
The drills will bring together border security forces from the three countries and focus on preventing reconnaissance, sabotage and other activities considered threats to security in border areas.
Training activities are expected to include joint planning, coordinated search operations, interception exercises and simulated strikes. The exercises are designed to improve the ability of the participating forces to coordinate their responses to potential security incidents along their borders.
The 2026 edition marks the second time that China, Russia and Mongolia have organized the trilateral “Border Cooperation” exercises. Beijing says the initiative is intended to strengthen mutual strategic trust, deepen cooperation between border security forces and contribute to stability in the countries’ shared border regions.
The drills also reflect the broader security cooperation developing among the three neighboring countries. Their geographic proximity gives border management and regional stability particular importance, especially in areas where the countries share extensive frontiers and face cross-border security challenges.
For China, Russia and Mongolia, joint exercises provide an opportunity to improve communication between security forces and test coordinated procedures in situations requiring rapid responses. Such activities can also contribute to greater familiarity between the participating units.
While the exercises are presented by the organizers as a measure aimed at border security and regional stability, their continuation highlights the growing importance of security coordination among the three countries.
