US-North Korea summit could take place at any time, Seoul intelligence says
A new assessment by South Korean intelligence suggests that a summit involving the United States and North Korea could become possible at any time, raising hopes of renewed diplomatic engagement over the Korean Peninsula's nuclear standoff.
South Korean lawmaker Yoon Kun-young told reporters that the country's intelligence agency had briefed parliament on developments surrounding Washington and Pyongyang. According to his account, the assessment indicates that conditions could allow a high-level meeting to take place without a clearly established date or location.
The intelligence assessment reportedly points to diplomatic activity taking place behind the scenes, potentially creating an opportunity for the United States and North Korea to resume direct discussions. However, neither Washington nor Pyongyang has publicly confirmed that preparations for a summit are underway.
Any renewed meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would represent a significant development after years of stalled negotiations. Previous diplomatic efforts focused heavily on North Korea's nuclear programme, sanctions and security guarantees, but failed to produce a lasting agreement.
The possibility of another summit comes as tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high. North Korea has continued to develop and test its military capabilities, while South Korea and the United States maintain close security cooperation and conduct joint military activities.
For Seoul, the prospect of renewed US-North Korean dialogue could create an opportunity to reduce tensions and revive negotiations on denuclearization and regional security. However, major differences remain between Washington and Pyongyang over the scope of nuclear disarmament, sanctions relief and security guarantees.
The latest intelligence assessment therefore signals a potential diplomatic opening rather than confirmation of an imminent summit. Any progress would depend on whether the two sides can overcome their longstanding disagreements and establish a framework for meaningful negotiations.
With no official announcement from either Washington or Pyongyang, international attention is now focused on whether behind-the-scenes contacts will eventually develop into formal talks and, potentially, a new meeting between Trump and Kim.
