Russia to host the World Nomad Games in Kazan in 2028
Russia is preparing to host the seventh edition of the World Nomad Games in 2028, with the competitions scheduled to take place in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the country's intention to host the event during his address to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, as Kyrgyzstan prepares to stage the sixth edition of the international competition.
“Russia is ready to host the next Games in 2028 in Kazan,” Putin said, adding that the country would welcome teams from nations interested in taking part.
Putin attended the opening ceremony of the sixth World Nomad Games in Bishkek, where athletes from more than 100 countries are participating. The event brings together competitors from different parts of the world to celebrate traditional sports and cultural heritage associated with nomadic communities.
The World Nomad Games have developed into an international platform combining sport, history and cultural traditions. The programme features disciplines rooted in the heritage of nomadic peoples, including traditional wrestling, horseback competitions and other forms of indigenous sporting activity.
The current edition in Kyrgyzstan features 43 traditional sports, highlighting the diversity of cultural practices represented at the event. The participation of athletes from more than 100 countries has also strengthened the Games' international profile.
Kazan is already known for its experience in hosting major sporting competitions and international events. The city has invested heavily in sports infrastructure and has welcomed numerous high-profile tournaments over the past decade.
Russia's selection of Kazan would therefore build on the city's established role as a major sporting centre. In February 2024, Putin also announced the launch of the international Games of the Future competition from Kazan, further highlighting the city's ambitions to host innovative and large-scale sporting events.
The 2028 World Nomad Games could provide Russia with another opportunity to promote traditional sports and cultural exchanges while bringing together participants from a wide range of countries.
